Level 0 — at the foot of the tower

For over 110 years, the Water Tower has watched over Timișoara, with the Bega River at its feet and the Iosefin district unfolding around it. Today, after extensive restoration, its doors have opened once again and, with them, a part of the city’s story.

Built on the banks of the Bega, the tower was once at the very heart of the city. It stored water, regulated pressure, and kept watch day and night so that Timișoara could go quietly about its life.

Today, the tower no longer holds the city’s water. It holds its stories.

History

Twin brother of the tower in Fabric

Built between 1913 and 1914, the tower was designed by architect János Lenarduzzi together with engineer Richárd Sabathiel, under the coordination of the city’s chief engineer, Stan Vidrighin.

It would become the “twin brother” of the tower in Fabric: two 52-metre structures bearing the stylistic imprint of late Art Nouveau, an architectural language in which aesthetics are shaped by function.

Restored and transformed into a cultural space, the tower still carries traces of its past: the original tanks, the original staircases and the details that have survived a century.

An unusual technical solution for water towers of that era: the water was drawn straight from the river and used separately from the drinking supply.

    The concrete staircase

The climb begins simply. Inside, a concrete staircase leads you up to the first level, where light comes in through the narrow windows of the brick facade.

    Two directions, two staircases

From the first level, two directions open up. A new metal staircase carries you toward the two tanks, now turned into exhibition space.

    About the original staircase

The old original metal staircase — very narrow and tightly spiralled — takes you to the top level. The same structure climbed a century ago by the people who looked after the city’s water. Beautiful and authentic, but cramped: not recommended for anyone claustrophobic.

    Inside the small tank

Level two sits entirely inside the tank for industrial water. You can touch the walls of thick sheet metal and see the iron rivets that have held them together for more than 100 years.

  4. Placeholder: the inside of the large tank, with riveted metal walls and cut-out windows.

    Inside the large tank

Level three is the largest in area and sits inside the big tank. Wide openings were cut into the metal walls so that you can enjoy the view offered by the 8 windows on this level.

    The city opens up
